SENIOR CAMP COORDINATOR / COUNSELOR

Job Description

The Senior Camp Coordinator / Counselor will play a major supporting role at our annual Summer is “Hear” Camp for children with hearing loss and their families, and will oversee the junior camp counselors. The senior camp coordinator / counselor will assist the Facilitator of Special Projects with the planning of Summer Camp – bookings of activities & transportation, confirming all bookings prior to camp, planning the agenda, preparing for camp activities & crafts, communication with families attending camp, & overseeing the junior camp counselors. The senior camp coordinator / counselor will also perform administrative duties relating to Summer Camp – dealing with telephone calls, collecting the application forms, & providing information for any families asking about camp.

Qualifications

  • Computer skills (MS Word); other software would be an asset, such as MS Excel
  • Experience with bookings & planning of an agenda OR experience working in a camp setting
  • Desire to work with individuals & families with hearing loss
  • Good communication & interpersonal skills
  • Approachable manner, comfortable interacting in any environment
  • Reliable, responsible, respectful, & patient
  • Ability to work well as part of a team
  • Certificate of Conduct (the fees associated with this will be paid by CHHA-NL)
  • Must be returning to Post-Secondary in Fall 2017

SUMMER CAMP 2017

JUNIOR CAMP COUNSELOR

Job Description

Junior Camp Counselor(s) will provide a supporting role at our annual Summer is “Hear” Camp for children with hearing loss and their families.  Junior camp counselor(s) will help CHHA-NL staff with organized activities and games for campers, assist with the set-up and clean up of camp activities, and act as a positive role model for children with hearing loss. Junior camp counselor(s) are expected to interact with campers and family members in a positive and professional manner.

Hours

Junior camp counselor(s) must be available to work at MacPherson College, Memorial University in St. John’s, NL from Thursday, July 6th (6:00pm) – Sunday, July 9th (2:00pm).

Travel to / from camp will take place on Thursday, July 6th and Sunday, July 9th. Additional details provided below.

Hours are approximately 8:00am – 10:00pm daily for the duration of camp with rest breaks and meal breaks provided.

Pay

$10.75 per hour.  Accommodations and meals are paid for all staff.

Qualifications

  • Applicants should be at least 16 years old. Preference will be given to individuals who are hard of hearing, late deafened or oral deaf.

  • Experience working with children will be considered an asset

Additional Details

  • The junior camp counselor positions are designed to provide work experience and leadership skills for individuals who are hard of hearing, late deafened or oral deaf.  
  • All junior camp counselors will be required to complete a certificate of conduct application (or equivalent in your area).  The fees associated with this will be paid by CHHA-NL.
  • Our summer camp is hearing accessible.  Successful applicants will be provided with FM listening systems (using telecoil and neckloop, or headset) if needed.
  • Interviews will be conducted in-person, where possible. Telephone interviews will be available via Skype for speech-reading accessibility.
  • Successful applicants will be asked to prepare a short activity or game to LEAD at camp. This activity must be prepared and approved prior to camp.
  • Training and orientation will be provided to all camp staff on Thursday, July 6th. Camp staff may also be asked to participate in an online orientation session prior to summer camp.
