Advocacy

The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association – Newfoundland and Labrador (CHHA-NL) advocates on behalf of the hard of hearing community in Newfoundland and Labrador with the aim to influence public policy and resource allocation decisions on the provincial level. The documents, including an overview of each issue, our position and recommendations on a variety of hearing loss advocacy issues have been included. These issues have been given priority but they are just a handful of the many issues that the association is actively pursuing.

 

Issue: Enhanced Provincial Hearing Aid Program (PHAP)

CHHA-NL’s Position: It is the position of CHHA-NL that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador should introduce an enhanced support program for hearing aids for qualifying persons with hearing loss so that more people on low incomes can access the program.

Issue: Cochlear Implants Availability and Issues with Support Services

CHHA-NL’s Position: It is the position of CHHA-NL that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador should introduce an enhanced Cochlear Implant program that provides wider availability of Bilateral Cochlear Implants and Servicing post-implant.

Issue: Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program (UNHSP)

CHHA-NL’s Position: It is the position of CHHA-NL that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador should adopt and introduce a formal policy for a Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program (UNHSP) in Newfoundland and Labrador and, if diagnosed with hearing loss, will receive an appropriate hearing loss intervention program at the earliest possible date as determined by their audiologist.

Issue: Inclusive Education (IE) for Children with Hearing Loss

CHHA-NL’s Position: It is the position of CHHA-NL that the Department of Education should introduce an enhanced Inclusive Education Program for children with hearing loss in Newfoundland and Labrador Schools.

Issue: Increased Scope of Subsidy for Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT)

CHHA-NL’s Position: It is the position of CHHA-NL that everyone with hearing loss in this province should have equal access and accommodation to hearing assistive technology so that persons with hearing loss can freely and fully access organizations and institutions and have the ability to participate in all daily activities the same as persons without hearing loss. Thus, the government should increase the scope of areas where hearing assistive technology is subsidized (currently employment related only) to permit equal access and accommodation based on individual needs.

Issue: Public Awareness and Education Campaign

CHHA-NL’s Position: It is the position of CHHA-NL that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador should develop and implement a Better Hearing for Life Public Education & Awareness Strategy to create awareness among the public of the dangers of Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) and to educate them regarding the appropriate hearing protection strategies that should be utilized to prevent hearing loss and the primary and secondary effects of same.

Issue: Improve Accessibility of the Justice System for Persons with Hearing Loss

CHHA-NL’s Position: It is the position of CHHA-NL that the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador should introduce a program to ensure that persons with hearing loss have Hearing Accessibility in the Court System in Newfoundland and Labrador
