Promoting Hearing Protection During a Monster Truck Rally

For Immediate Release:

St. John’s, June 9, 2015

St. John’s – The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association – Newfoundland and Labrador (CHHA-NL) would like to advise the public attending the Monster Spectacular (monster truck) event at Mile One Centre on Saturday, June 13 to BE NOISE AWARE.

Leon Mills, Executive Director, CHHA-NL has stated that “The show is sure to make for great entertainment, but people attending, especially parents, need to be mindful how the loud noise could permanently affect their hearing. The noise level at a monster truck show can range from 95-120 decibels. This level of sound exposure could cause permanent damage to your hearing. Parents also need to be aware that children are more vulnerable to damage due to their immature auditory development.”

To promote safe listening, CHHA-NL in partnership with St. John’s Sports and Entertainment, will be handing out information cards on how to practice safe listening at the event. This initiative at Saturday’s rally is meant to further the public’s awareness about noise related hearing loss and to help people understand this important but often over-looked, 100% preventable public health concern.

The Association’s recently launched earplug vending machine will also be stocked for the rally providing on-site hearing protection for the low cost of $1. The continued support from St. John’s Sports and Entertainment has been instrumental in helping to promote safe listening practices at noisy events and further demonstrates their dedication to the cause.

As part of its everyday service to the public, CHHA-NL provides FREE earplugs for children and adults at their office and loans out ear muffs, including those specifically designed for babies and small children through its Lending Program.
